| Beyonce Giselle Knowles (commonly referred to as Beyonce
Knowles) is an American singer and actress born on September 4, 1981,
in Houston, Texas.
She was the lead singer of the popular R&B group Destiny’s Child.
Beyonce began singing with the original members of the group as a pre-teen.
Her father, Matthew, served as manager of the group. They appeared on
Star Search, the popular television talent competition, and although they
didn't win the competition, they were offered a contract with Columbia
Records. Destiny’s Child (1997), their first release, had a great
success in Europe. Destiny's Child immediately started a tour of sold-out
shows in the European continent.
Next followed The Writing’s on the Wall (1999), which generated
three top-ten hits on the Billboard R&B singles chart. In the year
2000 some internal conflicts caused the departure of Luckett and Roberson
from the group. However, Destiny’s Child continued with their work
and played as a supporting act for Christina Aguilera’s summer tour.
In 2001, Destiny’s Child released, Survivor, their third album.
In 2004 Beyonce launched a successful solo career and soon after she
won five Grammy Awards, which gave her a record for most wins by a female
artist. Her second solo work, named B'Day, was released in September 2006
when Beyonce turned into 25. During the first week B'Day sold more than
540,000 copies in the U.S.
In 2001 Beyonce made her acting debut in MTV’s Hip Hopera: Carmen,
and one year later she co-starred as Foxxy Cleopatra in Mike Myers’
James Bond parody Goldmember. Then she worked in The Fighting Temptations
in 2004 and in two other movies in 2006: the The Pink Panther and Dreamgirls. |
